The Light of Christ in Word and Image

Drawing on a newly developed course taught at St. Nersess and St. Vladimir’s Seminaries, this new St. Nersess Online Public Course invites participants into a rich exploration of the intersection between biblical interpretation and visual theology. Offered as a five-module series entitled “The Light of Christ in Word and Image”, the course examines key Gospel passages that narrate the life of Christ, attending to their theophoric and revelatory message.

Participants will engage in close textual analysis of Gospel narratives, considering their theological, historical, and literary contexts, while also investigating how these sacred events were rendered visually by Armenian illuminators in manuscripts and artifacts. Through this integrated study of word and image, the course illuminates how the life and light of Christ have been received, interpreted, and revealed across both scripture and Christian art.

Dates: February 5 - March 5, Thursdays
Time: 8 pm - 9:15 pm EST

Presenter: Dr. Ani Shahinian, St. Nersess Assistant Professor of the Grace & Paul Shahinian Lectureship in Armenian Christian Art & Culture
